Abstract

The maintenance of good vocal health is a prerequisite for all singers. Existing
literature shows that not only health conditions but also multiple factors such
as dietary practices/food habits, knowledge, and others may influence vocal
performance. This present study, conducted among female students studying
vocal music, was aimed to explore the dietary awareness towards the
maintenance of optimal vocal health by the ingestion of healthful and
avoidance of harmful eatable/drinkable consumables. Participants (n=55)
were enrolled for the study from some colleges and universities of Kolkata,
West Bengal. Results revealed that although many subjects were aware of the
dietary practices needed to boost vocal performance, some of the subjects
seemed to be unaware of what should be consumed or avoided to care for
voice. It may be concluded that greater awareness is necessary among vocal
music students to promote healthy dietary practices to facilitate better vocal
health for best singing performance.
