Abstract

Women empowerment is a burning issue in the world as well as in India. At earlier time, they
enjoyed equal status with men. During post-Vedic era their status was declined. The Indian
national movement played significant role to empower women through active participation and
demand for their rights. After independence, Constitution of India guarantees equal rights to
women with men in all spheres of society. Today, many women are occupied respectable positions
in different areas. But even in this 21st century, gender inequality still exists and women
empowerment is an illusion of reality. This paper attempts to analyse the status of women in India
and it also highlights the issues and challenges of women empowerment. The study is purely
based on secondary sources. The paper concludes that access to education, health and economic
independence are only the enabling factors to women empowermen
